Therapeutic outdoor programs use the wilderness as a tool to quickly and effectively impact troubled teens. Emotional growth programs provide struggling adolescents an opportunity to challenge themselves physically and emotionally, develop a sense of personal responsibility, and view themselves in new positive self-perceptions.
Troubled teens nationwide are reaping the psychological and emotional benefits of animal-assisted therapy, namely, the use of horses, cows, dogs, and cats to help treat a variety of physical and psychological problems. Equine therapy programs are now widely used in residential treatment settings, as a component of outpatient therapy, or in gang-intervention programs and a growing body of evidence shows that horses have a lot to offer humans.
Many parents struggle with the decision of sending their child away to get help. Sometimes you might start to second-guess yourself, feeling guilty or fearful that you're just trying to get rid of the problem temporarily and that your child might hate you for it. Most parents feel that sending their child away to get treatment is an extreme move and usually don't come to make such a decision until after all other alternatives have failed.
Wilderness therapy is founded on the basic principle that nature serves as the ultimate teacher, unable to be manipulated by defiant teens.
The primary purpose of NATWC is to support the establishment and continuation of therapeutic wilderness camping organizations; with the attendant responsibility to educate the public as to the existence of such organizations and their success in helping troubled young people change their lives for the better.
