Teenagers unable to cope with changes during adolescence often display defiant behavior and anger, abuse drugs and alcohols, and have academic, social, and emotional problems. Trained therapists and counselors can work with teens to help them through those issues and others including depression, anxiety, trauma, stress and divorce.
Behavior modification therapy for troubled pre teens and adolescents involves specific strategies and actions to address behavioral problems and then give the teen tools to change those negative behaviors.
Troubled teens nationwide are reaping the psychological and emotional benefits of animal-assisted therapy, namely, the use of horses, cows, dogs, and cats to help treat a variety of physical and psychological problems. Equine therapy programs are now widely used in residential treatment settings, as a component of outpatient therapy, or in gang-intervention programs and a growing body of evidence shows that horses have a lot to offer humans.
The National Association of Therapeutic Schools and Programs (NATSAP) was created in January of 1999 to serve as a national resource for programs and professionals assisting young people beleaguered by emotional and behavioral difficulties. NATSAP publishes a directory annually to inform professionals, programs, and families about the many residential placement alternatives available to help struggling young people.
According to the current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental disorders (DSM-IV), conduct disorder is defined as "a repetitive and persistent pattern of behavior in which the basic rights of others or major age-appropriate societal norms or rules are violated." A residential treatment setting provides opportunities for a teen to learn new patterns of living in society.
It isnt always easy to know if your teen could benefit from therapy. Trust your intuition. If your teen lets you know he needs help, or youre still concerned, then make an appointment with the school counselor or your teenagers doctor, both of whom can guide you and your adolescent in the right direction.
Using horses as a tool to promote emotional growth in struggling teenagers is a phenomenon gaining numbers and national recognition. Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) is a collaborative effort between a licensed therapist and an equine specialist in which the goal is to generate a positive engagement with the students utilizing an experiential, animal-based modality.
