Schools Start Anti-Dating Violence Educational Programs for Teens

Burlington County in Pennsylvania has enacted a program within its high schools to stop dating violence.

When domestic violence officers in the area noticed people as young as 14 years old were seeking restraining orders against boyfriends or girlfriends, they decided to do something.

"We have to start educating people at an earlier age about domestic violence and the warning signs," Reema Scaramella, a spokesperson for the new "Date Safe" program said. "You can't soften domestic violence because people die."

A national survey from the National Domestic Violence Hotline indicated that about one in three high school students have been or will be involved in an abusive relationship.

Warning signs of an abusive relationship are extreme jealousy, controlling behavior such as telling someone what to wear, quickness to anger, depression, and substance abuse.
