Acne Does Get Worse Under Stress

A new study shows that acne gets worse under stress.

Researchers measured stress levels of 94 teenagers in Singapore before midyear examinations, when stress levels are high, and at the end of examinations when stress levels are low. During the stressful periods, the severity of the teens' acne increased by 23%.

The scientists, led by Dr. Gil Yosipovitch of Lake Forest University School of Medicine, found that production of sebum, an oily substance believed to be a culprit in acne, did not fluctuate during times of stress.

This study appears in the Swedish journal Acta Dermato-Venereologica.
